The club was formed in January 2000 to fill a need for public speaking skills in Newcastle, with members representing a wide range of backgrounds and interests.

The club is run on a day to day basis by an elected core committee of four newer members. These office bearers progress upwards every six months, gaining valuable management skills and experience. The rest of the committee is made up of elected critics and the previously retired president, who attends meetings for six months after leaving office.
