Our knowledge and understanding of orthodontic physiology and the advances in orthodontic materials allow us to align
crooked teeth gently and quickly in this new 21st Century. Maintaining the alignment achieved by orthodontic treatment
was, and still is, the major problem of orthodontic treatment.
Professor Bjorn Zachrisson from Norway demonstrated in the 1970’s how effective fixed lingual retention was at preventing
relapse. The main benefit of permanently fixed lingual retention (PFLR) is that the anterior teeth are locked into an
aesthetically attractive arrangement thereby fulfilling the primary requirements of orthodontic treatment for the
patients. Their involvement in maintaining this alignment requires little effort outside their routine dental care.
The durability of correctly constructed and fitted PFLR's is now known to be in excess of 19 years with no indications
yet that they will fail or that they are harmful to the dentition.
